Who is responsible for your information

Cathy Cookson is a licensed REALTOR® in Alberta, trading with RE/MAX Excellence. She is responsible for the personal information collected through cathycookson.com.

Handling of that information is governed by Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), and, for commercial email, by Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL).

What is collected

Information you give directly

When you fill in a form on this site, the information you type is collected. Depending on the form, that is:

Your first name and email address, if you request the downsizing guide

Your name, email address, phone number and message, if you use the contact form

Your name, contact details and property details, if you request a home evaluation

Only the fields marked required are needed. Anything else is optional.

Information collected automatically

Like most websites, this one records technical information about visits: the pages viewed, how long they were open, the approximate region the visit came from, the type of device and browser, and the site or search that referred you. This is collected through cookies and similar technologies.

This information is used to understand which pages are useful and which are not. It is not used to identify you by name.

Why it is collected

To send you the guide or other material you asked for

To reply to your enquiry

To prepare a home evaluation you requested

To send occasional email about the Edmonton market and moving well, if you have consented to receive it

To understand how the website is used, so it can be improved

To meet record-keeping obligations that apply to real estate practice in Alberta

Your information is not used for any purpose beyond these without asking you first.

Who it is shared with

Your personal information is never sold, rented or traded.

It is not passed to other real estate agents, lenders, contractors or any other business for them to market to you.

It is handled by a small number of service providers who operate the website and its systems on Cathy's behalf. They may only use the information to provide their service, and not for their own purposes:

HighLevel hosts this website, stores form submissions, and sends email

Google Analytics provides the website usage statistics described above

Meta provides a measurement tool that records which pages were visited on this site

Cloudflare provides domain and security services

Some of these providers store or process information on servers outside Canada, including in the United States. Information held in another country may be accessible to that country's courts and law enforcement under its own laws.

Information may also be disclosed where the law requires it, for example in response to a court order, or to a regulator such as the Real Estate Council of Alberta in connection with a complaint or audit.

Email, and how to stop receiving it

You will only receive marketing email if you asked for it, by requesting the guide or otherwise giving consent. Requesting a guide is consent to receive that guide and occasional related email, and nothing more.

Every marketing email includes a working unsubscribe link and a postal address. One click unsubscribes you, it takes effect promptly, and you will not be contacted again to ask why.

Unsubscribing from marketing email does not stop email that is part of a transaction you are actively engaged in, such as correspondence about a property you are buying or selling.

Cookies and tracking

This site uses cookies for website statistics and measurement. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and the site will still work, although some measurement will be incomplete.

Most browsers also offer a "Do Not Track" setting. There is no agreed industry standard for how websites should respond to it, so this site does not respond to it differently.

How long it is kept

Form submissions and email subscriptions are kept for as long as there is a reason to keep them, meaning while you are a client, a prospective client, or a consenting subscriber. If you unsubscribe, a minimal record of the unsubscribe is kept so that you are not contacted again by mistake.

Records relating to a completed real estate transaction are kept for the period required by Alberta real estate legislation.

You may ask for your information to be deleted at any time, and it will be, except where a law requires it to be retained.

How it is protected

Access to form submissions and contact records is limited to Cathy and, where necessary, people working directly with her. Systems holding the information are protected by passwords and the security measures of the providers listed above.

No website or system can be guaranteed completely secure. If a breach occurs that creates a real risk of significant harm, you will be notified, along with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta, as the law requires.

Your rights

You may:

Ask what personal information is held about you

Ask for a copy of it

Ask for it to be corrected if it is wrong

Ask for it to be deleted

Withdraw your consent to marketing email at any time

Ask a question or make a complaint about how your information has been handled

Requests are answered within 45 days, which is the period Alberta's PIPA allows. There is no charge for a straightforward request.

If you are not satisfied with the response, you may contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta directly.

Children

This website is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new date at the top. Material changes affecting how your information is used will be communicated by email to current subscribers.
